Cat Nail Maintenance

While cats may seem like incredibly independent creatures, they depend on you to maintain healthy habits and provide care that as a domesticated cat they may not be able to provide for themselves.

Cat Nail Trimming

Regular nail trimming is an essential part of caring for your cat, yet it is often overlooked. Overgrown nails can curl and grow into the paw pads, causing significant pain and increasing the risk of infection, sometimes requiring a vet visit and antibiotics. This is more common in older or less active cats, as well as cats that live primarily indoors or on carpeted surfaces.

Ideally, cats naturally wear down their nails through scratching posts, trees, or walking on hard surfaces. Active cats with access to these outlets may not need frequent trims, but it’s still important to check their claws every few weeks. The best time to do this is when your cat is relaxed, lounging on your lap or resting comfortably at home.

Overgrown Nails

Starting regular trimming at a young age is ideal, as it’s harder to introduce the habit to older cats who may resist paw handling. Trimming benefits your cat’s long-term health and protects your furniture, clothing, and skin. Long nails can get caught on fabric, rugs, or upholstery and may break painfully. Overgrown nails can also make it difficult for your cat to retract them, leaving claws exposed during everyday activities like playing, climbing, or communicating.

Some cats have polydactyly, meaning extra toes that require additional care. These extra claws often do not touch the ground or wear down naturally, making routine trimming even more critical for these cats.

Routine Maintenance

We recommend checking your cat’s nails every few weeks and trimming them every 6–8 weeks. To check the length, gently hold the paw and apply light pressure to the back of each toe to extend the claws.

While some owners choose to trim nails at home, it can be stressful for both cat and owner. At BooBoo Pet Grooming, we provide a calm, professional environment. Tranquilizers or sedation are never used.

The Value of Prevention

Regular nail trims are a small investment that prevents pain, reduces damage to furniture and clothing, and supports your cat’s overall well-being. We also offer combined packages including nail, ear, and paw pad care to prevent infections and reduce slipping from overgrown fur between the pads.

A few quick, regular trims can save your cat from discomfort and help keep your home damage-free, ensuring a happier, healthier companion.
