Why is my dog scared at the groomers?

SEPARATION ANXIETY

Leaving their owners can be stressful!

If your dog struggles with separation anxiety, a trip to the groomers can be a stressful experience. Regularly coming to appointments and routinely popping in can help ease their anxiety!

When you drop off your dog, make sure to keep your body language calm and happy!

If you act nervous and stressed, your dog will feel your energy and react the same way.

THE BATH…

Muddy puddles may be fun, but the bath is a different story

If your dog hasn’t had regular baths from puppy age (or sometimes even if they have!) they may really dislike the experience of getting clean. The smell of shampoo, being sprayed with water and standing up for the duration of the bath can all be reasons why your dog is nervous when they arrive.

& THE HAIR DRYER

The dreaded high velocity blow dryer is

the sworn enemy of many dogs

We always use happy hoodies to protect their ears, but the quietest dryers can affect dogs who are sensitive to noise.

Using the hair dryer at home can help reduce this fear!

TIPS & ADVICE

An acting masterclass

Around half the dogs who come to the salon experience anxiety and stress due to the reasons we have listed.

However, around half of these dogs tend to be excellent performers! When they’re in front of their owners, they will shake, pant, and cling to mum or dad, but the second you’re out of sight, they become happy and confident.

Why? They might think you want them to act that way…

Remain confident and collected

When it’s time for your grooming appointment, avoid the urge to coddle your dog. As much as you want to reassure them, fussing and prolonging the goodbye reinforces anxious behaviour and tells your dog that you want them to act this way.

Instead, stay calm and hand them to the groomer without hesitation.
